There might be a lot of car traffic in Beijing these days, but it's still much easier to get around by bike than in the greater New York area. The biggest intersections sometimes have these tunnels - unlit, and full of pedestrians, purveyors of fine snacks/fruit, even donkey carts, not to mention bikes whizzing around - the potential for chaos and the unexpected is everpresent...
